Key takeaways
- Google's help page says automations may not work for products with frequent price or availability changes, giving more than once per day as an example.
- The page adds that a product may be disapproved instead of updated on a detected mismatch, and that updates may stop if total mismatches become too large.
- The 17 March 2026 archived copy of the page does not contain these sentences, so they are new since then.
- Hana Kobzova of PPC News Feed dates the revision to 27 September 2026, while the help page itself shows no revision date.
- The page does not give a mismatch threshold or say how a disapproval clears, and it still tells merchants to keep providing accurate product data frequently.
Google has added a warning to its Merchant Center Help page on automatic updates. The page, Allow Merchant Center to update product information automatically, now says that “Automations may not work for products with frequent price or availability value changes (for example more than once per day). The product may be disapproved instead of updated if we detect a mismatch. We may also stop updates if the total number of detected mismatches becomes too large.” We read that wording on the live page on 8 October 2026.
What did the help page change?
Automations let Google use the structured data and other product data its crawlers find on your landing page to correct price, availability and condition in your Merchant Center data. They are meant for occasional mismatches: the page calls them a fix for sporadic problems with a small percentage of products, not a replacement for regular product data updates.
We compared the live page with the archived copy from 17 March 2026. The archived notes do not contain the two sentences about frequent changes and too many mismatches. Other differences we can see in the same notes:
- Tooling advice: the archived copy says to consider the Content API to schedule uploads, while the live page says merchants who expect frequent changes should use the Merchant API to manage product updates.
- Wording: “temporary problems” became “sporadic problems”, and “product data file” became “product data source”.
- Crawl rate: the archived copy suggested increasing Googlebot’s crawl rate to cover more products. We did not find that sentence on the live page.
Search Engine Roundtable says the document has “way more edits and updates” than the new sentences, and links the archive for comparison. We only list differences we saw in the two copies.
When was it revised?
The help page shows no revision date. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable wrote on 8 October that he thinks it was updated several days earlier. Per PPC News Feed, Hana Kobzova spotted the change and wrote that on 27 September 2026 the help page was revised to say products might be disapproved if the total detected mismatches become too large. We could not confirm that date from Google’s page.
What does the page not say?
Several things a merchant would want are missing:
- No threshold: the page does not define “frequent” beyond the example of more than once per day, and does not say how many mismatches count as too large.
- No scope: it does not say whether stopped updates apply to one product, a group of products or an account.
- No recovery steps: it does not say how a disapproval clears or how long that takes.
What should fast-moving stores do?
Stay within what the page says. It tells merchants to keep providing accurate product data frequently, for example by updating the data source, because Google cannot keep all products current with automations alone. For price, availability or condition that changes often, it points to the Merchant API for managing product updates. It also notes that automations rely on price, availability and condition annotations on the page, so keep that markup accurate: the product snippet schema checker tests it. If a page shows several strikethrough prices, the page says not to enable automatic price updates.
