Suresh Ganapathy, Google’s senior director of product management for consumer shopping, introduced Universal Cart on 15 October 2026. Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz reported the US launch.
What is Universal Cart?
Google describes it as an intelligent shopping cart and a hub for shopping on Google. It holds items from multiple retailers in one place, so shoppers do not juggle tabs or screenshots, and saved items persist across Google. It launches in the US across Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app.
What can shoppers do with it?
Google says the cart draws on its Shopping Graph, which it puts at over 60 billion continually refreshed product listings, to watch saved items and send alerts about price drops or restocks. It is built on Google Wallet, so it can suggest a payment method based on card perks and show promo codes in the cart. Shoppers can pay with Google Pay at certain merchants without leaving the cart, or move items to the merchant’s own cart.
How does merchant checkout work?
The checkout is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol. Google says merchants stay the seller of record, so order confirmations and customer support come from the merchant. It names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair, plus many Shopify merchants, and the post describes no separate onboarding process. Our earlier note on the Merchant Center UCP hub covers the setup side.
What changes for ecommerce SEO?
Google gives no data on traffic or conversion, so any effect on clicks to merchant sites is unmeasured. The practical point is that more purchase steps may now happen inside Google surfaces, which makes accurate product data and Merchant Center feeds matter more. Our ecommerce SEO and AI search hubs track related changes.
