Key takeaways

  • Adobe reports AI-referred retail visitors converted at a rate 54% higher than non-AI traffic in May 2026.
  • AI-referred visitors showed 15% higher engagement than non-AI traffic in May 2026, the strongest advantage Adobe has recorded since tracking began.
  • AI-referred retail visits generated 53% more revenue per visit in May 2026, against non-AI visits worth 128% more twelve months earlier.
  • AI-referred visitors spent 53% more time on site and viewed 23% more pages per visit than visitors from other channels in May 2026.
  • AI-referred visitors were 36% less likely to bounce, with AI bounce rates in a 17-20% band while non-AI rates hovered near 27%.

Adobe Digital Insights reports that AI-referred visits to U.S. retail sites now outperform non-AI traffic on every conversion and engagement metric it tracks. In May 2026 those visits converted at a rate 54% higher, per the vendor’s June 2026 report.

Do AI-referred shoppers convert better than other traffic?

Yes, on Adobe’s data. AI retail visitors converted at a rate 54% higher than non-AI traffic in May 2026. Revenue per visit followed the same direction: AI-referred visits generated 53% more than non-AI visits, up from a 37% advantage in March. The swing is sharp. Twelve months earlier, Adobe says, non-AI visits were worth 128% more than AI visits, and the gap has fully inverted.

How much more engaged are AI-referred visitors?

Engagement rate was 15% higher than non-AI traffic in May 2026, the strongest advantage recorded, after months in a 9-14% range. Visitors spent 53% more time on site and viewed 23% more pages per visit, against a 13% pages gap two months earlier. They were also 36% less likely to bounce, with AI bounce rates in a 17-20% band and non-AI rates near 27%.

What does this data not tell you?

These are percent differences, not absolute rates, so they say nothing about how many shoppers convert. Adobe measures visits, not people, and does not list which AI sources it counts. Its own survey adds context: 50% of consumers say they click links provided by an AI assistant when shopping, and 27% complete purchases directly through those links.

How fast is the channel growing?

Digital Commerce 360’s write-up of the same report puts AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites up 1,324% since October 2024, more than 14x, and up 138% year over year in May 2026. That is the backdrop for the quality figures: a channel growing from a tiny base can post large percent gaps while still sending a small fraction of visits. How readable are retail pages to AI tools?

Adobe also scored retail pages with its AI Content Visibility Checker, which estimates how much of a page large language models can read and gives a score out of 100%. In May 2026 cosmetics pages scored 63%, electronics 56%, sporting goods and apparel 51% each, grocery 48% and furniture and home 47%, per Digital Commerce 360. Adobe says even strong sectors have high-value pages where 30 to 40% of content is still missed by AI, and that brands must make their sites “fully accessible to machines as well.”

What does Google say about AI search traffic?

Google’s own documentation makes a parallel claim for its AI features: clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are “higher quality,” meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the site. It also says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Traffic from those features is counted inside Search Console’s overall “Web” search type, so Search Console will not separate it for you. Our AI answer readiness checker tests the page structure AI answers draw on.

Why we care

Treat AI referrals as a small, high-intent channel. The gap is about quality, not volume. Adobe’s report separately says AI visit share in retail grew 138% year over year in the same quarter, but a percent difference on a small base still means a small channel. Segment AI referrals in analytics before you compare them with organic search.

The evidence

Period
October 2024 to May 2026
Sample
More than 1 trillion U.S. retail visits

Method: Adobe Digital Insights (ADI) compared visits referred by generative AI sources with visits from all other sources on U.S. retail sites, month by month from October 2024 to May 2026, using Adobe Analytics first-party data. Metrics are percent differences between AI and non-AI traffic for conversion rate, engagement rate, time spent per visit, page views per visit, bounce rate and revenue per visit. Adobe describes the analysis as covering more than one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites and more than 100 million SKUs, aggregated and anonymized. Adobe does not publish the individual per-visit rates or its exact AI source list in this report. Figures are read from Adobe's June 2026 Q3 AI Traffic Trends Report (a public mirror of the PDF was read).

AI-referred vs non-AI retail visits, May 2026, percent difference
Revenue per visit+53%
