Key takeaways

  • Seer Interactive found comparison queries such as "X vs Y" triggered an AI Overview in 95.4% of 79,436 tracked organic impressions.
  • Question-format queries beginning with what, why, how, is or are triggered an AI Overview 85.9% of the time across 1.4 million impressions.
  • Single-word queries still triggered an AI Overview in 27.3% of cases despite spanning 25 million organic impressions, so query length alone is not a reliable safety signal.
  • Informational queries averaged 36% AI Overview prevalence across the full 2025 dataset, compared with 8% for commercial intent and 5% for transactional intent.
  • Informational queries that included "near me" triggered an AI Overview 76.9% of the time, a rate close to comparison and review formats despite carrying local intent.

Most AI Overview prevalence studies report one number for the whole SERP. Seer Interactive’s April 2026 update goes a level deeper: it classifies tens of thousands of queries by pattern and intent, then reports a trigger rate for each one. The spread between categories is far wider than any single “X% of searches” headline suggests.

Which query patterns trigger an AI Overview most often

Seer’s team classified 49,358 distinct queries using pattern matching on the query text, then checked how often each pattern showed an AI Overview:

  • Comparison queries (“X vs Y”): 95.4% of 79,436 organic impressions.
  • Review queries: 86.3% of 21,221 impressions.
  • Question-format queries (what, why, how, is, are): 85.9% of 1,408,843 impressions.
  • Price, cost or buy queries: 83.4% of 192,911 impressions.
  • Best-of queries: 81.3% of 105,279 impressions.
  • Near-me queries: 76.9% of 188,606 impressions.
  • Four-plus-word queries generally: 35.5% of 3,513,670 impressions.
  • Two-word queries: 34.8% of 32,598,962 impressions.
  • Three-word queries: 31.1% of 9,935,297 impressions.
  • Single-word queries: 27.3% of 25,042,440 impressions.

The comparison-query figure stands out: 267 of 280 queries Seer tracked in that pattern showed an AI Overview, near saturation for a single category. The near-me result is the other notable outlier, since local-intent searches are typically associated with map packs rather than synthesized answers, yet informational queries containing “near me” triggered an AI Overview 76.9% of the time in this dataset.

Query length by itself is a weaker predictor than query pattern. Single-word queries triggered an AI Overview in 27.3% of cases despite spanning 25 million impressions, only about eight points below the four-plus-word rate of 35.5%. A short, generic query is not meaningfully safer than a long one; a comparison-shaped query is far riskier than either.

How trigger rate breaks down by intent

Seer also classified the same query set into three intent buckets, using SERP feature signals (informational queries keyed to answer boxes and featured snippets, commercial to popular-product features, transactional to shopping boxes and local packs) rather than pattern matching alone:

  • Informational: 36% average AI Overview prevalence.
  • Commercial: 8%.
  • Transactional: 5%.

That is roughly a sevenfold gap between the informational and transactional buckets, based on the same 49,358-query cohort and 53 tracked accounts. The study’s own framing is direct: AI Overviews were built to answer questions in fewer clicks, and informational SERPs are exactly where that design does the most work. Transactional SERPs, where a shopping box or map result often already answers the query, leave less room for a synthesized summary to add value, and Google’s data shows that gap in the trigger rate itself.

Why we care

A single sitewide AI Overview percentage tells you little about which of your own pages are exposed. This breakdown gives a more useful diagnostic: if your content includes comparison pages, review pages or question-format headings, expect an AI Overview on nearly every one of those SERPs, regardless of how the site performs on average. If your traffic instead comes from short, transactional search intent queries, the exposure is real but an order of magnitude smaller. Match your content audit to the query pattern, not just the topic.

The evidence

Period
January 2025 to February 2026
Sample
49,358 queries, 5.47M tracked, 2.43B impressions

Method: Seer Interactive's R&D team tracked 53 client accounts across paid and organic search, restricting the cohort to search terms with complete monthly data for the full window: 5.47 million tracked queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions in total. For the query-type breakdown specifically, the team classified 49,358 distinct queries using pattern matching on query text combined with a SERP feature-based intent classification (informational queries keyed to answer boxes, featured snippets and knowledge panels; commercial to popular products and refine-by features; transactional to shopping boxes, local packs and job listings). AI Overview prevalence per category was calculated as AI Overview present divided by present plus absent, excluding nulls. The analysis was published in April 2026 and covers January 2025 through February 2026 as actuals, with March 2026 shown separately as a projection.

Frequently asked questions

Which query type is most likely to trigger an AI Overview?

Comparison queries in the "X vs Y" format, according to Seer Interactive's 2026 study. They triggered an AI Overview in 95.4% of 79,436 tracked organic impressions, the highest rate of any category the study measured, narrowly ahead of review queries at 86.3% and question-format queries at 85.9%.

Are short queries safer from AI Overviews than long ones?

Not safe, just less exposed. Single-word queries still triggered an AI Overview 27.3% of the time across 25 million organic impressions in Seer's dataset, while four-plus-word queries reached 35.5%. The gap between short and long queries is real but far smaller than the gap between query patterns like comparison or price searches and everything else.

How much less likely is a transactional query to trigger an AI Overview than an informational one?

About sevenfold. Seer Interactive measured transactional intent at 5% average AI Overview prevalence across its 2025 dataset, against 36% for informational intent and 8% for commercial intent, based on 49,358 classified queries.
