Key takeaways

  • Semrush found Related searches appear alongside an AI Overview 95.32% of the time.
  • People Also Ask appears on the same results page as an AI Overview 90.03% of the time, according to Semrush.
  • Featured snippets, image carousels and organic reviews are all seen less often beside an AI Overview than in March 2025.
  • Google Ads at the bottom of the page now appear on 25% of AI Overview results pages, against less than 1% in March 2025.
  • Semrush concludes AI Overviews are layered on top of existing formats rather than replacing them, at least for now.

Semrush’s AI Overviews study, written by Jana Garanko, tracked 10M+ keywords from January to November 2025. Its SERP feature section asks a narrower question than the headline trigger rate: when an AI Overview does appear, what else is on the page?

Which SERP features appear next to an AI Overview?

Semrush’s overlap analysis reports that Related searches (95.32%) and People Also Ask (90.03%) are “virtually guaranteed” to appear alongside an AI Overview. Video carousels and discussion and forum blocks are also prominent, though the page prints no percentage for them. Semrush adds that video carousels grew, while organic videos appear less often.

What has faded since March 2025?

Semrush states that many of the most prominent features from March are no longer seen as often with AI Overviews. Featured snippets, image carousels and organic reviews are all seen less often when an AI Overview appears. The page gives no replacement figures for those three features, so this report does not invent them.

Are ads now part of the AI Overview page?

Yes, on a quarter of them. When Semrush first ran the research in March 2025, ads were seen very rarely on the same SERP as an AI Overview. Google Ads at the bottom of the page now occur on 25% of AI Overview SERPs, against less than 1% in March.

How often did AI Overviews appear in the study window?

The overlap figures sit on top of a volatile base. Semrush reports AI Overviews on 6.49% of queries in January 2025, rising to 24.61% in July and falling back to 15.69% in November. The mix of queries changed too. Informational queries made up 91.3% of those triggering an AI Overview in January but 57.1% by October, while commercial queries rose from 8.15% to 18.57%, transactional from 1.98% to 13.94% and navigational from 0.84% to 10.33%. Our report on AI Overview trigger rate by query type compares other measurements.

Semrush also found that keywords which began showing an AI Overview saw their zero-click rate fall slightly, from 33.75% to 31.53%, which it presents as running against the common assumption.

What should SEOs take from it?

Semrush reads the data as AI Overviews being layered on top of existing formats rather than replacing them, at least for now. Its practical note is that video carousels and discussion blocks typically feature YouTube and Reddit, so a brand presence on those platforms could matter more for visibility. For your own videos, correct VideoObject markup is a basic check; our VideoObject schema checker tests the required properties.

Google’s documentation adds one practical limit: there is no special schema or markup needed to appear in AI Overviews, and a page must simply be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Search Console counts AI Overview appearances within the overall “Web” search type, so it cannot show which features sat beside them on a given query.

This is one vendor’s overlap measurement for one study window. The page does not report standalone prevalence for local packs or featured snippets, so those are not covered here. For the headline trigger rate, see AI Overview prevalence.

Method: Reported from Semrush's own AI Overviews study, which analyzed 10M+ keywords from the Semrush database. The SERP feature overlap section examined which features most often sit next to an AI Overview and compared the result with the March 2025 first edition. Semrush does not publish the keyword-level data behind that section, so only the figures printed on the page are used here. The study does not state whether the data is US-only or split by device.
