Key takeaways
- BrightEdge found only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10, roughly unchanged from a year earlier.
- Five out of six AI Overview citations pull from content that does not appear on page 1 of traditional organic results, according to the same tracking.
- Top-10 overlap ranges from 24.0% in healthcare down to 9.3% in restaurants, a gap of more than 14 percentage points across the nine industries BrightEdge tracks.
- Entertainment, travel and e-commerce saw the largest gains in overlap over the year, rising from single digits to the mid-teens even as the overall average barely changed.
- AI Overview presence itself grew from roughly 30% to 48% of BrightEdge's tracked queries over the same twelve months, a 58% increase.
Ranking on page 1 has long been treated as the price of entry for any other kind of search visibility. A year of BrightEdge’s own tracking says that assumption does not hold for AI Overviews: most of what Google cites there never showed up in the organic top 10 at all.
How much do AI Overview citations actually overlap with organic rankings?
BrightEdge tracked AI Overview citation sources against organic top-10 rankings across nine industry verticals from February 2025 to February 2026, using its AI Catalyst and Generative Parser tools. Across that year, only about 17% of the sources cited inside an AI Overview also ranked in the organic top 10 for the same query. Flip that around: roughly five out of six AI Overview citations come from pages that never reached page 1 of traditional search results at all. BrightEdge describes this figure as essentially flat compared with where it stood a year earlier, not a gap that is closing as AI Overviews mature.
That is the headline number, and it complicates a simple mental model that ranking well is what gets a page cited by Google’s AI systems. Whatever signals decide AI Overview citation, they are evidently not the same signals, or not weighted the same way, as the ones that decide the traditional top 10.
Which industries diverge most from the average?
The nine-industry breakdown shows the 17% average hides a wide spread. Healthcare sits highest at 24.0% overlap, with education at 23.1%, B2B tech at 22.6% and insurance at 22.4% close behind, all industries where BrightEdge’s data suggests citation and ranking still track each other reasonably closely. Restaurants sit lowest at 9.3%, with finance at 11.3% and e-commerce at 13.4%, industries where an AI Overview citation and a page-1 ranking are, more often than not, two separate outcomes for two separate pages.
The categories that moved the most over the year were not the leaders. Entertainment, travel and e-commerce each climbed from single digits toward the high teens or low twenties in relative terms, but each started from close to zero, so those gains barely dent the blended nine-industry average. BrightEdge’s own note on the data points to e-commerce specifically: transactional queries appear to get treated differently by Google’s AI systems than informational ones, which would explain why a category with enormous organic-ranking investment still shows one of the lowest citation overlaps in the set.
Why we care
This is not a report about whether AI Overviews are worth optimizing for, both this report’s source and BrightEdge’s parallel presence tracking show AI Overview coverage growing, from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries over the same twelve months, a 58% increase. It is a report about whether the existing playbook for organic ranking also earns AI Overview citation, and the answer, at least in BrightEdge’s own year of tracking, is mostly no. A page that already ranks top 10 has better odds of citation than one that does not in every industry measured, but in eight of the nine, it is still the minority outcome. Treat organic ranking and AI Overview citation as related but distinct targets, particularly outside healthcare, education, B2B tech and insurance, where the two are least likely to line up on the same page.
The evidence
- Period
- February 2025 to February 2026
- Sample
- Nine verticals, 12 months, BrightEdge AI Catalyst
Method: Drawn from BrightEdge's own published year-over-year tracking, built on its AI Catalyst and Generative Parser tools. BrightEdge monitors AI Overview presence, average pixel height, and citation-source overlap with organic top-10 rankings across nine industry verticals: healthcare, B2B tech, education, insurance, entertainment, travel, e-commerce, finance and restaurants. The page states the tracking window and the industry categories but does not disclose an exact query or keyword count, so the sample size below reflects only what BrightEdge discloses.

Frequently asked questions
Does ranking in the organic top 10 get a page cited in AI Overviews?
Not reliably. BrightEdge's year-long tracking found only about 17% of AI Overview citations also rank in the organic top 10, meaning roughly five out of six citations come from pages that do not appear on page 1 of traditional results.
Which industries have the highest overlap between organic rankings and AI Overview citations?
Healthcare leads at 24.0%, followed by education at 23.1%, B2B tech at 22.6% and insurance at 22.4%, according to BrightEdge. Restaurants sit lowest at 9.3%, with finance close behind at 11.3%.
Is the gap between organic rankings and AI Overview citations closing?
Barely, on average. The overall top-10 overlap figure BrightEdge reports moved only slightly over the year it tracked. Some categories, entertainment, travel and e-commerce, rose sharply in relative terms, but each started from a very low base, so the blended average stayed close to flat.
