Key takeaways
- NewzDash's analysis of over 400 news publishers worldwide put Google Discover's share of Google traffic to news sites at 67.51%.
- Discover's share climbed from 37.03% in 2023 to 67.51%, which NewzDash's John Shehata described as nearly doubling in two years.
- Traditional web search fell from 51.10% of Google traffic to news publishers in 2023 to 27.42% over the same period.
- The percentages are shares of Google surface traffic, so they show a shift in mix and do not report absolute clicks gained or lost.
How much of Google’s news traffic comes from Discover?
According to NewzDash’s analysis of over 400 news publishers worldwide, Google Discover accounted for 67.51% of Google traffic to news publishers, up from 37.03% in 2023. Traditional web search moved the other way, from 51.10% to 27.42%.
NewzDash’s John Shehata summarized it this way: Discover’s share “has nearly doubled in two years.” He called Discover “the undisputed leader in traffic distribution” and said traditional web search “has plummeted” over the same period. The chart above plots the four figures exactly as reported.
How large is the swing in percentage points?
Discover gained 30.48 points of share, and web search lost 23.68 points, as Search Engine Roundtable lays out the figures. The two moves are not equal, so the remaining Google surfaces also shifted, but the source does not say which ones or by how much. The reported figures cover Discover and web search only, so this report does not estimate the rest.
Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz added his own read: he called Discover “super hit or miss” and a hard place to get consistent, dependable and targeted traffic from. That is commentary, not data, but it matches what Google itself says.
What does the data not tell you?
The percentages describe how Google traffic to news sites is split between surfaces. They do not report clicks, sessions or revenue, so a rising Discover share can coexist with falling total traffic if web search shrinks faster. Read it as a change in mix.
The source is a summary of a LinkedIn post, and NewzDash has not published the underlying publisher list. That limits how far the numbers can be checked independently.
What does Google say about Discover traffic?
Google’s documentation warns that “traffic from Discover is less predictable or dependable when compared to keyword-driven search visits,” and calls it “supplemental to your keyword-driven search traffic.” A news site now getting two-thirds of its Google traffic from Discover is leaning on the surface Google itself describes as the least dependable.
Eligibility is automatic. Content can appear in Discover if it is indexed and meets Discover’s content policies, and Google says no special tags or structured data are required. To raise the odds, Google recommends large images at least 1200 px wide, enabled with the max-image-preview:large setting, titles that capture the essence of the content, and no clickbait meant to inflate engagement.
What should publishers take from it?
A traffic mix dominated by Discover carries concentration risk. Check your own split first: Search Console’s Performance report for Discover shows impressions, clicks and CTR for content that appeared there in the last 16 months, and comparing it with the web search report tells you whether your site matches this sample.
