Google Web Guide is a beta, opt-in feature that mixes an AI results interface with traditional web search in one screen. Its “classic search” button exists to let a searcher step back out of that interface. Search Engine Roundtable reported on September 20, 2026 that the button is not working as intended.
What is Web Guide?
Google announced Web Guide on July 24, 2025 as a Search Labs experiment that uses AI to organize the search results page. Google said it uses a custom version of Gemini to understand both a query and content on the web, and relies on query fan-out: issuing multiple related searches at the same time to identify the most relevant results. The results are then grouped, for example into pages related to specific aspects of a query.
At launch Google said Web Guide appeared on the Web tab for people who opted in, and that they could switch back to standard results at any time. It also said it would start to show AI-organized results in other parts of Search, including the “All” results tab, as it learned where they are most useful. That promise of an easy way back is exactly what this bug breaks.
What is the reported bug?
The classic search button fails to exit Web Guide. Instead of returning to normal search results, it reloads the same Web Guide results. Damien Andell first posted about it on X, writing that it is “impossible to return to classic search,” and that it always redirects back to Web Guide. Barry Schwartz said he could replicate the bug and posted a GIF showing it in action.
Is the behavior consistent?
No, based on what was reported. Glenn Gabe said the behavior was inconsistent for him, sometimes getting stuck in Web Guide and sometimes able to escape it. The report also notes two related display issues: stray Web Guide text appearing below knowledge panels where it should not, and a malformed link showing “null://null” instead of a site name.
What should site owners take from it?
Very little that calls for action. Web Guide is an opt-in Labs experiment, and a navigation bug changes what a searcher can click, not how pages are crawled or ranked. If you spot-check your own results while opted in, remember the button may not take you back to classic results, so compare in a session without the experiment before drawing conclusions. The malformed “null://null” link is a display fault reported by searchers, not a sign of a problem on the linked site.
Why we care
Web Guide is opt-in and most searchers do not actively use it, so the immediate reach of this bug is small. But a control that does not do what its label says undermines trust in the interface regardless of how many people use it, and it is worth tracking whether AI search surfaces like this ship with basic navigation still broken. Google is testing other ways to route searchers into AI surfaces, such as an AI Mode button in the results page search bar. The source has no official Google statement and no fix timeline, so we do not claim either.
