Key takeaways

  • Google's status dashboard dates the September 2026 spam update to 24 September 2026 at 09:15 US Pacific time.
  • Google says the update applies globally and to all languages, and that the rollout may take up to two weeks.
  • It is the fourth confirmed spam update of 2026, after March, June and August, and the seventh confirmed update of the year.
  • The 37 days since the August 2026 spam update is the shortest gap between spam updates in our 2026 record.
  • Ranking movement that began before 09:15 Pacific on 24 September started before this rollout did.

Google started the September 2026 spam update on 24 September at 09:15 US Pacific time. Its Search Status Dashboard note says the update “applies globally and to all languages” and that the rollout may take up to two weeks. That is the whole of what Google has published about it.

How does it fit the 2026 update record?

Our record of confirmed ranking updates lists three spam updates in 2026 before this one, all taken from the same dashboard:

UpdateStartedDuration
March 2026 spam update24 Mar 202619 hours, 30 minutes
June 2026 spam update24 Jun 20262 days, 1 hour
August 2026 spam update18 Aug 20262 days, 16 hours
September 2026 spam update24 Sep 2026Up to two weeks (stated)

That makes September the fourth spam update of 2026. Our frequency count had 2026 at six confirmed updates through 18 August, so this is the seventh of the year.

The spacing is tightening. March to June was 92 days, June to August was 55, and August to September was 37. None of the three earlier 2026 spam updates ran past three days, yet Google gives this one a window of up to two weeks. That window is a stated maximum, not a measured duration, and the record already shows spam rollouts ranging from under a day to 26 days 15 hours (August 2025). Treat two weeks as the planning horizon until the dashboard posts an end time.

Google does not call it one. The incident note says “spam update” with no mention of links, and Search Engine Roundtable reports that it is not specific to link spam. That matters for recovery, because Google’s spam updates documentation treats the two differently.

How do you tell a spam-update drop from other volatility?

Start with the timestamp. The rollout began at 09:15 Pacific on 24 September. Rank trackers were already moving on 23 September, as covered in our report on the September 23-24 volatility, and Search Engine Roundtable says the morning volatility before the announcement was not this update. A decline that begins before the start time has another cause.

Use Google’s list, not the trackers. Google’s documentation says it shares when spam updates happen on its list of Search ranking updates. A drop only lines up with this update if it falls inside that dated window.

Then check the policies, not the content quality. Google says sites that see a change after a spam update should review its spam policies to make sure they comply. That is a narrower question than the one a core update raises, as our note on the August 2026 spam update set out.

What does recovery look like?

Google’s documentation is plain about the timeline: making changes may help a site improve if its automated systems learn over a period of months that the site complies. For link spam specifically, it warns that changes might not produce an improvement, because once its systems remove the effect of spammy links, any ranking benefit those links generated is lost.

Why we care

Four spam updates in six months, each closer to the last, means a clean pre-update baseline is getting harder to find. If you lost traffic this week, mark 24 September 09:15 Pacific on the series first and wait for Google’s end time before judging the size of the move.
