# Panda 4.0 (2014): a new Panda algorithm, 7.5% of queries

## The short answer

Google began rolling out Panda 4.0 on 20 May 2014, announced by Matt Cutts on Twitter. It was a new version of the Panda algorithm rather than a data refresh. Google told Search Engine Land it affected about 7.5% of English queries noticeably and would be gentler for some sites. Google gave no completion date.

## Key takeaways

- Matt Cutts announced on Twitter on 20 May 2014 that Panda 4.0 was rolling out that day.
- Google told Search Engine Land it affected about 7.5% of English queries noticeably.
- It was a new version of the algorithm, not one of Panda's routine monthly data refreshes.
- Google said it would be gentler for some sites and lay groundwork for future changes.
- Google's ranking systems guide says Panda became part of its core ranking systems in 2015.

## What Google changed

On 20 May 2014, Matt Cutts, then head of Google's webspam team, posted on
[Twitter](https://x.com/mattcutts/status/468891756982185985): "Google is rolling out our Panda 4.0
update starting today." Panda was Google's algorithm for keeping sites with low-quality content
out of top results, launched in February 2011.

By 2014, Panda ran as routine monthly refreshes that Google no longer announced. Panda 4.0 was
different. [Search Engine Land](https://searchengineland.com/google-begins-rolling-panda-4-0-now-192043)
reported it as a change to how Panda identifies sites, not just a data refresh. From talking to
Google, it said the update would "be gentler for some sites, and lay the groundwork for future
changes in that direction."

The name came from Google. Search Engine Land, which had numbered Panda releases in sequence,
wrote that "4.0 is how Google named this specific update."

## When it rolled out

Cutts's post dates the start to 20 May 2014.
[Search Engine Roundtable](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-panda-4-18583.html) reported the
next day that it "began rolling out yesterday." Google stated no completion date.

## What is known about its impact

Google's figure came through Search Engine Land: Panda 4.0 "affects different languages to
different degrees," and in English about 7.5% of queries were affected "to a degree that a
regular user might notice." Google gave no site-level figures. Treat any list of winners and
losers as a third-party estimate.

## What site owners should do

Panda no longer exists as a separate system. Google's
[ranking systems guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ranking-systems-guide)
lists it under retired systems and says it "evolved and became part of our core ranking systems in
2015." Google's current helpful content guidance carries the same tests:

- Check whether content provides original information, reporting, research or analysis.
- Check whether it gives a substantial, complete description of the topic, not a thin page.
- Avoid simply copying or rewriting other sources without adding substantial value.

## How to check whether it affected you

This is historical. Search Console keeps 16 months of data, so May 2014 can only be checked in
archived analytics, by comparing Google organic traffic before and after 20 May 2014. Google also
confirmed an update for spammy queries the weekend before, so check which pages moved. The [Google Algorithm Updates timeline](/updates)
lists every update with its dates.
